Geology Field Trip Antelope Island
Lets Rock!
Service Description
In this course we will learn about geology while exploring Antelope Island! Meeting at 2:00 (time will shift as we head into winter), we will spend the day exploring Antelope Island with various hikes and drives to learn about how the island was formed and what makes it so unique! Along the way we will get to watch wildlife like bison, pronghorn antelope, bighorn sheep, and a variety of waterfowl. Geology is a foundational science and forms the bedrock (pun intended) of all the other ecology sciences. We will also take a deep dive into geology the science with activities such as exploring erosion with our erosion table, fossil formation and paleontology, how geodes are formed, and take a much closer look at obsidian! We'll also take some time to explore the Salt Lake, take a closer look at the brine shrimp, and if weather permits experience floating in the lake! During the winter we will not take the chilly plunge but instead explore how the lake was formed and why it matters to Utah. This 4-5 hour expedition begins outside Antelope Island entrance where we will meet you and drive in together. Our field trip begins the moment we enter the park, from there we will drive around the island to different hiking points and geological features, stopping for lunch/dinner partway through our tour. We will finish with a beautiful view watching the sun set over the Great Salt Lake. Please wear appropriate hiking clothing, bring water, sunscreen, and lunch. We will have a large water cooler with us and snacks. Parents are encouraged to participate, but are not paying clients.
